The Day12 Project
Helping tourism work for local people,
not just the other way round

H
ow many 'independent' travellers take to the road each year? How has backpacking changed in the 40 years since the first hippies hit the overland trail? Is backpacking really more 'sustainable' than mass tourism? And does the old adage 'Take only photographs, leave only footprints' still apply when my tuk-tuk driver is on Facebook?!

More than footprints?, our 2009 campaign, is a 40,075 kilometre journey around the backpacker trail to talk to local NGOs, give students in universities around the world the opportunity to debate the issues and find out from local people how we can make our journeys more sustainable and make a positive contribution to those places we visit.

Download our guide to More than footprints? and find out how you can get involved.
