Three years ago I moved from Auckland to Whitianga, the secret capital of North Island's
Coromandel Peninsula. Although now mentioned in every guide book, there are
still lots of places that want to be discovered by the independent traveller.
There is much more to see than Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove (which are
both world famous, but in the summer months quite crowded).
Wanna know about my
favourite place? Otama Beach (20 minutes by car north of my home in Whitianga). The
reactions are always the same: ¡°Woah, this looks like paradise!¡±. No public
transport will get you there, but rental cars are cheap and available in
Whitianga. Don't be put off by the narrow and winding gravel roads, just keep
left and take it easy! And bring your fishing gear to catch big snapper at
sunset (Didn't catch any? the sunset was certainly well worth it anyway!). On
the way to Otama, plan a stop at the Kuaotunu Store for one of their famous
ice-creams ¨C an absolute must! I haven't tried the ¡°Kuaotunu Killer¡± yet;
allegedly the biggest ice-cream in New Zealand!
