Day12 magazine is written by travellers just like you. Our Journal-istas send us articles from their journals. Things they have written sitting on trains crossing India, standing on buses in Mexico City, or lying on beaches just about everywhere. Their writing reflects the reality of travel not the myth of travel the current travel media promotes where every sunset is golden and every street kid has a smile.
See below for details on the various columns and sections and meet some of our contributors
We travel closer to the ground, sometimes too close, and we learn more, or at least, should learn more, from the people we meet on our journeys. But there are serious issues about the numbers of backpackers trampling the world's temples and the amount of money we spend has a serious impact on the places we visit. The Day12 Project wants to hear what you think about the recent growth in backpacking. How can we address those issues? The Day12 Project is a very positive opportunity to help our community change the way we travel. With your help, your journal-ism, and your support, we can spread the word. Have a look through your journals and send us an article. Have a look through your photos and send us a gallery for The Zoom Room. Have a look at the format of the magazine and send us something for our 'Welcome to my World' section or write a Country Profile for us. We backpackers have a unique insight into the countries we visit and that's reflected in our Journal-ism.
The Day12 Project is a group of writers, photographers, journalists, students, teachers, promoters, DJs and designers from around the world who are concerned about the social and environmental impact of our journeys. If you know of anyone who would be interested in writing for the magazine or sending us some photos, get them to write to us at info@day12.com If you've written something for us already and were just waiting for the right time , NOW IS IT!

The Journal-ism section is the home for your travel stories, journal entries and gonzo wanderings. It's a travel writer's free-for-all; stories, yarns, accounts; history, anthropology, philosophy and "What I did on my summer holiday' scribblings. There's a lot of talent trapped in your journals. Good stuff goes on the site, the best goes in the magazine... |
The trouble with travel photography, as we see it, is that a professional photographer, travelling the world looking for a photo to sell, is never going to produce anything we recognise from our journeys.
Just for a change we'd like to see some photos from the backpacker trail that weren't taken with a $4000 camera. What have you got..? |

The Day12 Guide to... here |

Choosing a Thai Beach Bungalow / Driving in India / Staying regular in New Zealand... Solid, practical info only a backpacker can tell you. What did you learn on your last trip? If you didn't know it at the beginning of your journey, but knew it at the end, you can guarantee those following you won't know about it either. Put it online and help them out. |
Do you know what a 'Grogun' is? or a 'Pokey'? And did you know that Bangkok is not the capital of Thailand? The Day12 A-Z contains Everything you need to know about your next destination. Compiled by you, a recent survey has revealed that all of it is absotively, posolutely, almost, but not quite, entirely true. Probably. |

What's being done out on the backpacker trail to make our journeys more sustainable? If you've visited or worked on a project trying to lessen the impact of our journeys, let us know about it. Maybe you work for a charity or NGO which promotes sustainable development or works in the tourism sector? |
It's not all just fruit picking and barwork. There's teaching, telesales and working for bed and board on organic farms. There are many more opportunities for making money, or at least stopping spending it, than we realise. What have you done to get by? Careful now... |
| |

From hu-hu grubs and worm pancakes at New Zealand's Wild Food gut-buster via rum and salsa at Cuba's Fiesta del Fuego to Nimbin, Australia and one of the world's only marijuana harvest festivals. If you don't tell us about it, we'll miss it. And then how would you feel? Yes. |
Books, music, movies, events, software, kit, shopping, museums, galleries, bars, clubs, food and drink... All sorts of stuff that Day12 readers have found through their journeys that they think we ought to know about. What have you got to add? |
| |
| |
Where do you live, study or work? Insider knowledge is what we're all looking for and Day12 is where backpackers can give each other the inside scoop. Write and tell us about your favourite beach, bar, cafe or club. The best part of town, or the worst. |
Day12 Phrase books are Full of words and phrases you really need as a backpacker. Have a look at our list and if you speak a langauge which doesn't appear here, or have some suggestions for one which does, get in touch and we'll send you the template. |
