Battambang did not escape the atrocities of Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge. This painting at Wat Phnom Sampeau depicts what happened at "The Killing Cave".
People were tied to support beams in the temple, awaiting their deaths. They were then brought over to the top of a hill with a large hole which lead into the cave below. The victims were shot, hacked with knives, or beaten to death with bamboo sticks . Their bodies were then dropped into the cave.
